Chapter 10
Ryck was in the mess decks, eating breakfast, when the world was passed over the 1MC.[40]
It was War.
Chapter 11
Hannah looked worried as she tried to go on, âI just want to know . . . I mean . . . well, Joshua be still at his, you know, and you?â
Hannah was being careful. All comms were being monitored by the censor bots, and if they picked up any security breach, the line would be cut, and the military side of the conversation could face punishment.
Ryck thought it was amazing that the Federation even allowed personal comms in time of war. But the powers that be thought a happy sailor or Marine was a good sailor or Marine. Self-serving or not, Ryck appreciated it.
Ryck knew what Hannah was saying even if she couldnât be too direct. Joshua had expected to be set to a line unit, but all DI positions were frozen as draftees started arriving en masse at the recruit depot. He was out of any fighting, and she wanted some assurance that Ryck would also be safe. He couldnât say that, and not just because of the censor bots. He didnât know if he would be safe. He was on a capital ship of the Navy, going into harmâs way. The Federation Navy was far stronger than the coalition Greater France had gathered, and would still be even if the Confederation decided to join with the French.
Thankfully, The Brotherhood had declared its neutrality. Their Navy could match the Federationâs, and their Army was much larger than the Federationâs Marines.
âThis will all be over soon, and Iâll be back for I-Day, just like I promised,â he told her.
She looked at him with a small frown causing her forehead to wrinkle up.
âHow do you know that? I be wanting that more than you can imagine, and Iâve prayed for your safety, but the news is . . .â
Ryck held up a finger to silence her. He didnât want the conversation cut off.
âSo, Lysa says youâve been accepted for the Ph.D. program? I thought you said you didnât have a chance,â he said, trying to change the subject.
She sighed, then took the hint.
âI guess I just wowed them with my proposal. You know me, Miss Sunshine,â she said, her demeanor anything but sunshiny.
âI knew you would. You are the most capable woman Iâve ever met. No, the most capable person,â he said.
It was true, he realized. The two of them had gotten quite close since Joshuaâs wedding, and despite his protestations to his friends, he was thinking about a future together with her. If she would take him, he constantly reminded himself. He was proud of being a Marine, but he was hardly in her class. Extremely intelligent, athletic, and very personable, she could have whomever she wanted. It amazed him that she seemed attached to a dumb grunt.
âQuit the sugar-mouth, Ryck, always thinking you can sweet-talk me,â she said, but Ryck could see her soften up. She always protested his compliments, but Ryck thought she secretly liked them.
